Assumptions

  • 40 hours a week, 5 days a week, 52 paid weeks a year.
  • Bi-weekly = annual ÷ 26, four-weekly = annual ÷ 13, semi-monthly = annual ÷ 24, monthly = annual ÷ 12.
  • Full-time.
  • Figures are before tax. Overtime, bonuses and allowances are not included.

These are gross (before-tax) figures. To estimate tax with your own country’s bands, try the income tax bracket calculator.

How to use it

How to convert an annual salary to an hourly rate

Job ads quote pay in different ways. One says 52,000 a year, another 25 an hour, a third 2,000 every two weeks. To compare them, you need them on the same footing. Enter any one figure and this calculator shows the rest, from hourly to yearly.

The answer depends on the hours you work and how many weeks a year you’re paid for, so both are yours to set.

  1. 1

Enter your pay and its period

Type the amount and choose how it’s quoted: per hour, day, week, two weeks, half-month, four weeks, month or year.

  2. 2

Set your hours and paid weeks

Enter hours per week and days per week. Paid weeks default to 52; lower the figure if you take unpaid leave.

  3. 3

    Compare every pay period

The table shows your pay for every period at once. Change any input and the whole table updates.

What this calculator does

  • Convert from hourly, daily, weekly, bi-weekly, semi-monthly, 4-weekly, monthly or yearly pay
  • Every other pay period shown at once
  • Your own hours per week and days per week
  • Paid weeks per year, to allow for unpaid leave
  • Semi-monthly and bi-weekly kept separate and labeled clearly
  • Works in any currency
Worked example

Two salaries, converted to hourly

52,000 a year at 40 hours, and 30,000 at 37.5 hours

Period52,000 / yr, 40 h30,000 / yr, 37.5 h
Hourly25.0015.38
Weekly1,000.00576.92
Bi-weekly (÷ 26)2,000.001,153.85
Semi-monthly (÷ 24)2,166.671,250.00
Monthly (÷ 12)4,333.332,500.00

Both use 52 paid weeks. For the first, 52,000 ÷ (40 × 52) = 25.00 an hour. For the second, 30,000 ÷ (37.5 × 52) = 15.3846, shown as 15.38.

The method

How the conversion works

Everything goes through an annual figure first. hourly = annual ÷ (hours per week × paid weeks). Weekly pay is annual ÷ paid weeks, and daily pay is weekly ÷ days per week. Bi-weekly is annual ÷ 26, semi-monthly is annual ÷ 24, 4-weekly is annual ÷ 13 and monthly is annual ÷ 12. The full method is on the methodology page.

Going the other way, 25 an hour at 40 hours for 50 paid weeks is 25 × 40 × 50 = 50,000 a year, not 52,000. Two unpaid weeks take 2,000 off the total.

Bi-weekly vs semi-monthly

They sound alike but aren’t. Bi-weekly means every two weeks, which is 26 paydays a year. Semi-monthly means twice a month, which is 24. So on the same salary a bi-weekly check is smaller. Some calendar years have 27 bi-weekly paydays, which is why some employers use a slightly different hours divisor.

Monthly pay isn’t four weeks of pay either. A year has 52 weeks but only 12 months, so a month averages about 4.33 weeks. That’s why 4-weekly pay (13 paydays) and monthly pay (12 paydays) differ on the same salary. On 52,000 a year, a 4-weekly check is 4,000.00 and a monthly one is 4,333.33.

Before tax, not after

Every figure here is gross pay, before tax and deductions. To see how income tax bands apply, use the income tax bracket calculator. To see what a raise is worth in percent, try the percentage calculator. To turn a monthly figure into a savings plan, the savings goal calculator picks up from here.

Limits

Good to know

  • Paid weeks matter. If you take unpaid leave, lower the paid weeks so your hourly rate reflects the time you’re actually paid for.
  • Semi-monthly is annual ÷ 24 and bi-weekly is annual ÷ 26. They’re different pay periods.
  • Overtime, bonuses, tips and shift premiums aren’t included unless you add them to the amount yourself.
  • All figures are before tax. Your take-home pay will be lower.

What happens to the numbers you type

Your numbers stay in your browser. MoneyOtter works out your results on your device. We don’t send the amounts you type to our servers or store them. If you allow analytics, we record only broad ranges (for example “middle tax band”) to understand how the calculators are used. Like any website with ads, this page also loads advertising scripts; see our Privacy Policy.

The calculator is plain code running in this tab. It makes no network requests with your figures, and nothing is saved when you leave unless you choose to keep it. Read the privacy policy for how ads and analytics work on this site.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How do I convert an annual salary to an hourly rate?

Divide the salary by hours per week times paid weeks per year. 52,000 ÷ (40 × 52) = 25.00 an hour.

How many working hours are there in a year?

At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks it’s 2,080. At 37.5 hours it’s 1,950. Subtract any unpaid weeks to get the hours you’re actually paid for.

What is 30,000 a year as an hourly rate?

At 37.5 hours a week and 52 paid weeks, it’s 30,000 ÷ 1,950 = 15.38 an hour. At 40 hours it’s 14.42.

Is bi-weekly pay the same as semi-monthly pay?

No. Bi-weekly is every two weeks, 26 times a year. Semi-monthly is twice a month, 24 times a year. Each bi-weekly check is smaller on the same salary.

How does unpaid leave change my hourly rate?

Lower the paid weeks. At 25 an hour and 40 hours, 50 paid weeks give 50,000 a year instead of 52,000.

Does this calculator include tax?

No. All figures are gross. The income tax bracket calculator shows how bands apply to a yearly figure.

How do I convert an hourly rate to an annual salary?

Multiply the hourly rate by hours per week and by paid weeks. 25 × 40 × 52 = 52,000 a year.
