How to use it

How to add or remove VAT, GST or sales tax from a price

Prices are quoted two ways: before tax (net) or with tax included (gross). This calculator moves between them in either direction. It works for VAT in Europe, GST in Australia and New Zealand, HST and QST in Canada and sales tax in the US, at any rate you choose.

Pick a country or state rate, or type your own. Every rate in the picker comes from a tax authority source, and the full table, with sources and the date each rate was checked, is on the VAT and sales tax rates page.

  1. 1

    Choose add or remove

Add tax to a net price, or remove it from a price that already includes tax. The labels switch to VAT, GST, HST or sales tax to match your choice.

  2. 2

    Pick or type a rate

Choose a country, US state or Canadian province, or enter any rate up to three decimals. In the US, add your county or city rate on top of the state base rate.

  3. 3

    Enter one amount or many

Type a single amount, or paste up to 200 lines from a spreadsheet. Choose rounding per line or on the total, then copy, export a CSV or print.

Quebec: GST 5% + QST 9.975% on 100.00100.005.00 + 9.98114.98

Removing tax from 99.99 gives 99.99 ÷ 1.20 = 83.325, which rounds to 83.33. The tax is what’s left, 16.66, so net and tax add back to 99.99 exactly. At 8.875%, the tax of 8.875 rounds half up to 8.88. In Quebec, GST and QST are each charged on the pre-tax price, so QST is 9.975, rounded to 9.98.

The method

How the tax is calculated

Adding tax: tax = net × rate and gross = net + tax. Removing tax: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate) and tax = gross − net.

Taking 20% of a gross price doesn’t remove 20% VAT. 20% of 120.00 is 24.00, but the VAT inside 120.00 is only 20.00. With Australia’s 10% GST, the tax in an inclusive price is one eleventh of it. The calculator uses exact decimals and rounds only at the end, as set out on the methodology page.

Rounding per line or on the total

Three items at 0.99 each, taxed at 20%, show why this matters. Rounded per line, each tax is 0.198 → 0.20, so the total tax is 0.60. Rounded on the total, 2.97 × 20% = 0.594 → 0.59. One cent apart.

Tax authorities set their own rules on which method an invoice may use. Check the rule that applies to you before you issue invoices.

US sales tax and Canadian provinces

The US has no national sales tax. States set a base rate and many counties and cities add their own. The picker holds state base rates only, because local rate data is typically sold under commercial licenses. Add your local rate in its own field and the two are combined.

Canada charges 5% GST everywhere. Some provinces combine it with their own tax as a single HST. Others charge a separate PST, and Quebec charges QST at 9.975% alongside GST.

Need a markup or a discount instead? Use the percentage calculator. For an invoice in another currency, the currency converter handles the conversion, and the income tax bracket calculator covers tax on income.

Limits

Good to know

  • The rate table is sourced and dated: see VAT and sales tax rates for each rate’s authority and the date it was checked.
  • Reduced rates, zero rates and exemptions depend on the item and the country. The picker shows the standard rate and common reduced rates only.
  • US local sales tax rates aren’t stored. Add your county or city rate yourself.
  • Registration thresholds, reverse charges and cross-border rules aren’t modeled.
  • CSV exports neutralize cells that start with = + - or @, so a spreadsheet won’t run them as formulas.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How do I remove VAT from a price?

Divide the gross price by 1 plus the rate. At 20%, 99.99 ÷ 1.20 = 83.33 net, and the VAT is the difference, 16.66.

How do I calculate GST in Australia?

GST is 10%. To add it, multiply by 1.10. To find the GST in an inclusive price, divide by 11: a 110.00 price includes 10.00 GST.

Why isn’t the VAT just 20% of the total price?

Because the rate applies to the net price, not the gross. The VAT inside 120.00 at 20% is 20.00, not 24.00. Use remove mode to get it right.

How is sales tax calculated in Quebec?

GST at 5% and QST at 9.975% are each charged on the pre-tax price. On 100.00 that’s 5.00 + 9.98, for a total of 114.98.

What sales tax rate applies in my US city?

Your total rate is the state base rate plus any county, city or district rates. Pick your state, then add the local part from your state’s revenue department.

Does rounding per line or on the total change the result?

It can, by a cent or so per invoice. Three lines of 0.99 at 20% give 0.60 tax per line but 0.59 on the total.

What’s the difference between VAT, GST and HST?

They’re all taxes on sales. VAT is the usual name in Europe and the UK, GST in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and India, and HST is Canada’s combined federal and provincial tax.
