An income year from July to June

Australia’s income year runs from 1 July to 30 June; 2026–27 started on 1 July 2026. Tax returns open in July and, if you lodge yourself, are due by 31 October; registered tax agents can lodge later. Rate changes legislated in the Budget take effect from 1 July, so the first pay in July is when you will notice them.

How Australian pay is taxed

Residents pay nothing on the first $18,200 of taxable income, then 15%, 30%, 37%, 45% across four brackets. The low income tax offset (up to $700) reduces tax for lower earners. The Medicare levy of 2% funds public health care, and people on higher incomes without private hospital cover pay an extra Medicare levy surcharge. Graduates with a HELP or other study loan make compulsory repayments through the tax system. Employers pay superannuation of 12% on top of salary into your fund. Foreign residents and working holiday makers have separate tax tables and no tax-free threshold.

What our calculator covers

The Australian pay calculator covers all three residency tables, the low income tax offset, Medicare levy with its low-income shade-in and family reduction, the surcharge tiers, study loan repayments, salary sacrifice and packages that include super. It shows the tax owed for the income year in weekly, fortnightly, monthly or yearly amounts; the ATO withholding tables are a separate calculation.
