Defaults differ by country. Each row uses that country’s calculator with its default options — single filer or tax class I, no pension or student loan, and the region shown — for its current tax year. Conversion uses the European Central Bank euro reference rate for 2026-10-07, a reference rate rather than a rate you could exchange at. Healthcare, pension and other costs that taxes pay for differ too, so take-home pay alone isn’t a cost-of-living comparison.
Your numbers stay in your browser. MoneyOtter works out your results on your device. We don’t send the amounts you type to our servers or store them. If you allow analytics, we record only broad ranges (for example “middle tax band”) to understand how the calculators are used. Like any website with ads, this page also loads advertising scripts; see our Privacy Policy.
Estimates for general information only — not financial, tax or legal advice. Your actual figures depend on your employer’s payroll, your full tax situation, your lender’s or bank’s terms and rules we may not model. Check official sources and speak to a qualified adviser before making decisions. Disclaimer
One salary, five tax systems
Every country turns gross pay into take-home pay differently. The United States layers federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare and a state income tax that ranges from nothing to more than ten percent. The United Kingdom runs income tax and National Insurance through PAYE, with Scotland setting its own bands. Canada splits income tax between Ottawa and the provinces and adds pension and employment insurance premiums. Australia has a generous tax-free threshold and a Medicare levy, with employer super paid on top. Germany withholds income tax by tax class and charges four social insurances that together take around a fifth of pay.
The compare table runs each country’s own engine — the same code as the full calculators — on the salary you enter, converted at the day’s European Central Bank reference rate. Each row links to the country calculator, where you can add the options that matter for you, and each country page links to a rates page listing every figure with its official source.
Comparing take-home pay is a starting point, not a verdict. Higher deductions often pay for things you would otherwise buy yourself — public health insurance in Germany, the State Pension in the UK, Medicare in Australia — while US workers usually pay health insurance premiums out of their take-home pay. Rents, prices and the exchange rate you actually get also move the comparison.

Questions people ask
Which countries can I calculate?
United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Germany. Each country is published only after its rules pass official test cases and an independent cross-check. Next on the list: Ireland, New Zealand, India, South Africa. For anywhere else, the income tax bracket calculator lets you enter local bands yourself.
Why do two countries with similar tax rates give different take-home pay?
Because income tax is only part of it. Social contributions — Social Security and Medicare in the US, National Insurance in the UK, CPP and EI in Canada, and Germany’s four social insurances — can cost as much as income tax for middle earners, and each country sets its own allowances and ceilings.
How is the salary converted between currencies?
At the European Central Bank euro reference rate for 2026-10-07, the same data as our currency converter. It is a reference rate, not a rate a bank would give you. You can also pick the currency of the country you’re interested in to enter a local salary directly.
Is this the same as the full country calculators?
The figures come from the same engines, but the compare table uses each country’s default options: single, no pension, no student loan, the region shown. Open a country’s calculator to add filing status, tax class, pension, state or province and every other local option.
Are the results tax advice?
No. They are estimates of the annual tax and contributions on employment income for general information. Each country page lists what it doesn’t cover, and every rate is linked to the official source on its rates page.
